Part 3 – One of Jacob’s Sons

Who is the true Israel?

In Part 3 of the “Light of the North” series, we explore the origins of Israel’s house—the man named Jacob, whose twelve sons became twelve tribes. The Bible speaks of Israel as a people, but it’s not always about Judah or the modern state. Where are these tribes now, and why do we hear of only one? Could the North hold part of this lost story?

Jacob: A Name That Carries a Nation
Jacob, descendant of Abraham and Isaac, was a patriarch whose life was marked by struggle—with men and God. After wrestling with God’s angel, he received a new name: Israel, “he who strives with God” (Genesis 32:28). This name became the identity of a nation. From Jacob’s twelve sons grew the tribes of Israel:
- Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Benjamin
- Joseph, whose legacy split into Ephraim and Manasseh, forming a “13th tribe.”

These tribes were Israel’s house, God’s covenant people. But why did their story fracture?

📜 “I will give you a name that endures forever among the nations.”

One House, Many Parts
Israel’s house did not stay united. After Solomon’s death, the kingdom split:
- Northern Kingdom (Israel): Ten tribes, often called “Ephraim” or “Israel.”
- Southern Kingdom (Judah): Judah, Benjamin, and some Levites.

In 722 BCE, Assyria crushed the northern kingdom, scattering the ten tribes into obscurity. Thus began the mystery of the “lost tribes.” But did they truly vanish, or do their descendants live among us—without their name?

Lost Sheep and Judah’s Staff
Today, “Jew” refers to Judah’s descendants, but what of the others? The New Testament’s “lost sheep” (Matthew 15:24) are not just sinners but the scattered tribes of Israel’s house—those who blended into the nations and forgot their heritage.

Ezekiel’s prophecy (chapter 37) promises the reunion of two staffs—Judah and Ephraim. This remains unfulfilled, awaiting its time. Could Issachar, one of Jacob’s sons, hold a key to this awakening?

The North: A Forgotten Part of the House?
Some peoples—like the Finns—have cherished silence, justice, and a bond with nature, free of colonial burdens. In them may lie a connection to Israel’s house: a love for land, wisdom, and humble service.

What if the North is not mere periphery but a spiritual watchtower, bearing an ancient covenant—waiting for the moment when Jacob’s sons recognize each other?

Toward Issachar’s Trail
This series focuses on Issachar’s tribe—the legacy of wise counselors. Could this tribe endure in the North, perhaps in Finland, ready to rise to its prophetic role?

💬 What do you think? Could the North be part of Israel’s house? Share your thoughts in the comments!

In the Next Part: We’ll dive into Issachar’s role and its possible traces in Finland. If the North’s light ignites, whose story does it carry?
